I was born in northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., and spent third through seventh grade living in Southeast Asia. My family came back to the States in 1974, and I finished high school here before getting a degree in English from Smith College. It was in college that I started pursuing my two passions: books and the science of the living world. For a long time I held jobs in publishing and wrote novels about invented worlds. Now I work for myself, writing mostly books about life science and the natural world. I’ve come to feel that it’s all story, all worth telling.
